"Trouble So Hard" is a composition by Vera Hall (1902 - 1964), American singer-songwriter, who walked through the styles of Blues, Folk, Spirituals and Work-Songs.

Vera Hall was not a well-known artist, but her contribution to black music culture is unquestionable! She ended up gaining greater visibility when she was recorded by John Lomax for the American National Library in the late 1930s.

Trouble So Hard was first recorded in 1937, in a singing style reminiscent of cotton plantation slaves' chants, when a lead voice called and the other voices responded.

"Oh Lordy, trouble so hard
Don't nobody know my troubles but God"

Vera Hall's song speaks of a happy moment at the beginning, and a very sad moment at the end. This, together with the phrase "No one knows my problems, but God", brings us a reflection on how we judge other people's lives. We all have our own problems, our good and bad moments.

Everyone knows the joy and pain they carry within themselves, and it is not up to us to judge them. Another timeless song, fundamental in times of such lack of empathy, like today.

The references used to build this version were numerous. The cigar box appears, once again, bringing a dirtier and rawer sound, which I like a lot!! The stomp box i played in this song gives it an incredible strength. And the changes from the original single-note melody to the traditional melodic blues trio, gave it the vibe that I was looking for.

Life would be much harder without music, right?! I can't imagine how we would have gotten through these last few years without music.

"Trouble So Hard" é uma composição de Vera Hall (1902 - 1964), cantora e compositora norte-americana, que passeava entre os estilos de Blues, Folk, Spirituals e Work-Songs.

Vera Hall não foi uma artista muito conhecida, mas sua contribuição para a cultura da música negra é inquestionável! Ela acabou ganhando maior visibilidade quando foi gravada por John Lomax para a Biblioteca Nacional norte-americana, ao final dos anos 1930.

Trouble So Hard foi gravada a primeira vez em 1937, num estilo de cantar que lembrava os cantos dos escravos das plantações de algodão, quando uma voz principal fazia o chamado e as outras vozes respondiam.

Essa parte da música fala: "Ninguém conhece meus problemas, mas Deus."

A canção de Vera Hall fala de um momento feliz no início, e de um momento muito triste, no final. Isso, aliado à frase "Ninguém conhece meus problemas, mas Deus", nos traz uma reflexão sobre como nós julgamos a vida do outro. Cada um tem os seus problemas, os seus momentos bons e ruins. Cada um sabe a alegria e a dor que carrega dentro de si, não cabendo a nós julgá-las. Mais uma canção atemporal, que se faz necessária em tempos de tanta falta de empatia, como os de agora.

As referências usadas para construir essa versão foram inúmeras. A cigar box aparece, mais uma vez, trazendo uma sonoridade mais suja e crua, que me agrada demais!! O acompanhamento do stomp box, nessa música, dá a ela uma força incrível. E a modificação da melodia original de uma única nota para o trio melódico tradicional de Blues, deu a cara que eu queria, a minha.

A vida seria muito mais difícil sem música, não é verdade?! Eu não consigo imaginar como teríamos atravessado esses últimos anos, sem música.
