It could be so simple to more thoughtfully and intentionally design the sound of our public spaces. The crosswalk button could be an interactive and even joyful/playful experience. This concept of the crosswalk button generating a random set of tones could extend to each neighborhood in a city like Portland. Each neighborhood could have a unique set of melodic tones that reflect the identity and history of each neighborhood/community, created in collaboration with each community. These melodies/tones could then be used in other public experiences like transit, notifying riders of which neighborhood/stop they’re at and adding to the sense memory of place via sound.
