The opening of Psalm 68 echoes Numbers 10:35, Moses’ call whenever the ark set out in the wilderness. The psalm celebrates the presence of God coming victoriously through the wilderness and ultimately up to Jerusalem. It was probably used to celebrate the ark of the covenant being brought into Jerusalem. Accordingly, Paul quotes from Psalm 68 in Ephesians 4 to speak of Jesus’ ascension: Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, the presence of God, ascending victoriously to the heavenly Jerusalem.
