PLEATS DID NOT PLEASE ME.
One of the first artist books I made about gender disparity within schools in Sri Lanka, an ongoing series begun >20 yrs ago. My preoccupation with pleating started early >50yrs ago-see past posts.
Sri Lankan school GIRLS uniforms were white cotton starched pleated dresses, while boys wore coloured shorts & white shirts. As a child I resented spending my evenings ironing those wretched pleated uniforms while boys had none of these tedious tasks, allowing them more time for #sports, #music & #reading
It was far worse if you were poor & had no electricity: heavy metal irons filled with hot coals were used, which had the added risk of dropping soot, making social mobility more difficult for girls.
Education plays a major part in the life & culture of the country, which dates back to 543 BC.
Since then an education system evolved based around the Buddhist temples & monastic colleges(mostly MALE).
In 1938 Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) education was made formally FREE following the granting of universal franchise in 1931. Instigated by the Minister of Education, late Hon. Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara, Sri Lanka’s high adult literacy rate rose to 96.3% in 2015, which is above average by world & regional standards. FREE school meals, materials for uniforms, books & FREE University.
