From Music Director Lorraine Fitzmaurice:
The scripture for this Sunday comes from Paul's letter to the Romans, and part of it reads:
"Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister."
This quote made me think of the song "Lean on Me" by the late great Bill Withers. It's a song about helping one another when we need it the most. The lyrics make it very clear that it goes both ways - sometimes you're all the way down and your friend is going to be able to help you out, and sometimes your friend is the one with a "problem that you'd understand." It imagines a world where no one is ashamed to ask for help, and no one judges their brothers and sisters for having difficult problems that they can't solve by themselves.
We're in a very tough time in our country's history, and the country is also in a very divisive, individualistic frame of mind. Isolation encourages everyone to look out primarily for themselves. That makes it especially hard to ask for help, for fear of being judged. Thankfully, Father Dyer is a community of peace where people can get the help they need; a community full of people who are generous with their capabilities to help without judgement.
Here are the Lyrics:
Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow.
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on.
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong . . .
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on.
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load.
If you just call me (call me)
If you need a friend (call me)
If you ever need a friend (call me).
Personally, I think Paul (and more importantly, Jesus) would approve.
