Paradise City was an initiative first thought up by Musician-Director Karel Van Mileghem. Where the face of the program was concerned, he wanted a musician who truly excels in playing the primal instrument: the drums. Rhythm can always be used to quickly find a fantastic musical click in any culture. This is what led Karel to Mario Goossens, who embarked on this fantastic adventure full of passion and dedication.
All the music included in the series was written by Mario Goossens and Karel Van Mileghem, often inspired by, or written with, artists they got to know during the time they spent in the various different cities.
Musician Mario Goossens (from the Belgian rock act "Triggerfinger" ) visits six cities which were badly hit by either natural or man-made disasters in
the Paradise City documentary series: Port-au-Prince, Belfast, New Orleans, Kigali, Hiroshima and Detroit.
He uses these visits to try and find out how the residents found the strength to carry on again, following the devastating catastrophes which hit them. And how music can help to heal cities like these. Mario meets up with musical strongmen, who do everything in their power to get their cities back on track again.
Many of the genres from our pop history originated from misery. Gospel, blues, jazz, soul, R&B, punk, techno, reggae and hip hop are just a few of those created in a society suffering hard times, with precious few opportunities for development.
