The famous Yiddish song. It was composed by by the lawyer, folk poet and songwriter Mark Warshawsky (1840-1907). The title is also sometimes transliterated as "Oifn Pripetshik." Warshawsky lived in Russia under Czarist rule.

The song describes a cheder* (Jewish elementary school). teacher drilling his students in the Hebrew alphabet. The teacher tries to explain to his young pupils the significance of the letters, in light of the persecution that they all have to bear. The same lesson might have been imparted during any number of difficult eras in Jewish history.
