a poetry film about the COVID-19 pandemic

In 2020 I created / curated an online, multi-media project I called ’21 Fragments’.

It brought together a collection of people from around the world – and explored, over a period of 21 weeks, the ways in which people were coping / responding to the unfolding pandemic (each week I published a fragment).

The fragments contained a picture, a poem / essay, a piece of music / song and sometimes a film. The project explored how people coped with / responded to – the unfolding pandemic.

I contributed pieces to the project too. One poem was ‘Once upon a time in a pandemic blues’.

I decided to treat the poem in terms of a poetry film.

Cast out from life’s predictable rhythm
Sucked into pandemic’s unknown prism
A wan whimper not a cataclysm

In these seasons of invisible threat
Through time’s reshaping let us not forget
Fear we do not serve masks us free of debt

Sickness is more than a physical thing
Black and white encompass how colours sing
In uncertainty’s maze patience is king

With informed care our lives fill breath with hope

Through balanced reason life weaves ways to cope

We shall nurture end of bleak tunnel scope

Let our new world unfold and realign
This darkness will eventually shine
