From August 11-14 2021, the electric guitarist Phillip Staffa (based in Berlin) was a featured guest for the latest Open_Music Session in their studio in the Stuttgart Wagenhallen. The first three days were spent finding a setup, choosing instruments, improvising freely with one another, sometimes entirely spontaneously and at other times pursuing some form of strategy proposed by one or more of the players. Phillip brought several of his own such compositional strategies to the sessions, and they provided the context for the free improvisations with Roderik Vanderstraeten and Scott Roller from Open_Music. The highlights of those days are preserved as hours of audio which we will edit down to an album for Bandcamp.

On August 14th we invited a small group of friends to witness a single-set video shoot in the studio – beginning with a set of five miniatures in which the only guiding principle was to keep each movement relatively short, like 1-3 minutes, and that they should strive to be of a contrasting nature.

Following this introductory set of pieces were three trio improvisations according to designs and using samples provided by Phillip Staffa:
