Usually, I sing, but right now I have something to say!

Did you know that there is still a lack of women of color represented in leadership positions in the field of music: opera, recording and performing arts industry? “Supply and Demand: Gender Disparity in Opera Part 1” from The Empowered Musician by Dana Varga included statistics by DataUSA.io which states that 3/4 college vocal performance degrees are obtained by females; however, the number of opera roles offered go to males who also receive higher wages.

Data USA: Musicians, Singers, and Related Workers also published statistics gathered from the 2016 US Census Bureau that music industry employers comprised of 60.4%, males. 76.5% of music industry leaders, musicians, and employers were Caucasian, 14.5% were Black, and the rest were other ethnicities. Latinos were not even found on this data chart. OperaWire’s article on “Hispanic Heritage Month 2017: 11 Male Singers Who Have Become Icons in Opera” by Francisco Salazar noted only Latino opera singers and no females.

Therefore, as a CSUN Presidential Scholar, I have created a project, including this podcast, in the hopes to provide a platform of representation for women of color artists as well as dynamic conversations and interviews.
While this podcast will highlight stories concerning female singers of color, this podcast is for every listener of all ethnicities, genders, ages, career professionals, and different walks of life. Notes From Her uses music to be a powerful instrument of storytelling and social advocacy. Notes From Her will be available on SoundCloud, and xochitlshernandez.com.
