I actually think of this as a clinical condition. Not a mere blabbermouth, but a person who suspects, if they aren’t speaking, they might vanish from Earth. I recall a woman approaching me as I was leaving the laundry room at The Piano Factory. She was at least 50 feet away and talking. Not to herself, but to me as if we were in a hot-breath one-way conversation. I’d been through this with her before. I tried, politely, to interject, to respond in some way as if to let her know I was thinking about what she was saying. But there was no crack in the onslaught. In the hallway that day I pretended I got a phone call (even though I didn’t even have a phone). It allowed me to turn slightly, back up and disappear. I felt badly for her, but no way was I going to be trapped in her net of talk infinity. I notice this elsewhere, of course. In the cartoon balloon over my head: ‘Avoid At All Costs’.
