Application for the Central Devised Theatre Course (CDT) in Central School of Speech and Drama.

"No. Yellow" is my first original audiovisual work in which I have performed, written and directed the project. As part of my application for the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the work is inspired by Arshile Gorky's painting "Betrothal I" (1947).
I wanted to create a work that reflects on the notions of our time, the circumstances in which we live in the present moment, but that also reflects deeply on my own state of mind and being.
I imagined and wrote about this division, entrappement and nostalgia of a time that has gone by, of moments with loved ones that have faded, only to become a distant memory.
Perhaps inspired by the tormented story of Gorky's life and the way he divided space and used colour in his painting, I thought of people floating in time and space, with a deep desire to touch one another, but never being able to do so.
I placed myself in the time and place where I've felt the same, and sought to create a work that metaphorically and visually reflected this need to go back, to hide in memories, to relive moments.
To put it in Gorky's words, "When something is finished, that means it's dead, doesn't it? I believe in everlastingness. I never finish a painting- I just stop working on it for a while."
I suppose that's how I wish to view certain aspects of life: memories, echoes of moments reflecting on the past, future and present.
The question is how do you not end up being trapped in this vicious cycle of wanting what you cannot have, never quite reaching the result you desire, and thus leaving this painting called "life", on hold.
