Fluttering pointillist synth work by Qasim Naqvi meets wincingly-impressive body contortion from dancer Matthew 'ET' Gibbs in new video for 'No Tongue.'
Filmed in a WWII bunker somewhere in East L.A., the video for the Pakistani-American composer Qasim Naqvi owes most of its eerie, alien-like feel to the bone breaking of alternative street dancer/contortionist Matthew 'ET' Gibbs. The mathematical shapes of his tutting are a perfect visual parallel to the bleeps and whooshes of Naqvi’s analog synth and the muscular twitching makes it look like Gibbs’ body is directly linked with the music. Uncanny. Directed by Christina Burchard.
Qasim Naqvi is known for playing heady, percussive jams with the Brooklyn-based jazz and electronic-slanted trio Dawn Of Midi. “No Tongue” serves as our introduction to Naqvi’s synth-teeming soundscapes. We are at first immersed deep amongst dark synthesizers and plucking, dissonant notes. It feels like being suspended, floating in space with help just out of reach. After a deliciously tense pause, we are rushed without warning down a stream of playful, unpredictable synth plops, in the vein of a more sinister Four Tet. Naqvi shows promise as a composer of marvelous opacity.
