This is a short story about how I was lucky enough to video a rare New Guinea singing dog.
In 2005 this was the view from my office at the Freeport Mine in Papua, Indonesia.
My friend, anthropologist Dr Carolyn Cook invited me to join her on a field trip.
We’d be travelling to a remote and rugged mountainous area. We loaded up with supplies including coffee plants.
Our destination was a tiny village in distant valley. It took us 30 minutes to get there in the helicopter, but if you did the journey on foot it would take you two weeks of scrambling along treacherous mountain trails.
This remote, cloud-shrouded place on the side of a mountain was home to the Amungme People.
It was extremely rugged and there was no electricity, running water, phone or other basics.
And it rained. A lot.
Carolyn had previously lived among the Amongme and knew their language and customs.
I interviewed some of the people for a documentary and attended a church service that was a real cultural experience.
One afternoon we found ourselves in a very smoky communal hut, listening to singing which was kind of like chanting.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before a Papuan singing dog chimed in, to everyone’s delight. This one was a cross-breed but a singer nonetheless.
Two days later the helicopter was back to pick us up, and we were fortunate to be able to transport a woman and her sick child out to Freeport’s hospital.
For Caroline and I, it was back to our apartments and our jobs on the side of a mountain.
