The title and theme of our video is “My Melbourne”, a space that landmarks our twenties which
features major transportation (e.g. tram) and significant landmarks (e.g. Melbourne Central). The
making of this video allowed us to notice and appreciate what we experience in our daily life in
Melbourne.
Filmmaking is a collaborative process. The final product would inherently be a combination of all
members' perspectives. Part of our process included sharing our lived experiences of/in Melbourne;
we exchanged the more subjective, stories of trauma, growing pains and relationships with others;
we also discussed varying topography of cities we've visited, the more objective information of
places.
Written together, the voice-over draws upon both of our personal narratives. It is a rather abstract
reflection in the form of a verse rather than prose. A human voice that communicates thoughts and
feelings renders a human character. “My Melbourne” is an attempt at taking ownership of our
relationship with our environment; by calling it a “memory”, the video becomes a reflexive and
personal account.
Due to frequent weather changes, the lighting across the recorded footage varied. So we decided to
colour grade with the goal of making the 2-minute video more cinematic. Through this process of
editing, we have literally added a personal touch by tempering with the image/s of Melbourne.
What made the final cut is a marriage between subjective and objective points of view. The
movement of life is juxtaposed with, and confined within, the stillness of man-made structures.
Documenting mass human traffic in various parts of the city provides a sense of space and time in
this city; it is a glimpse into the local people’s relationship with their environment. The more
objective visual information is accompanied by the more subjective voice-over; this video
communicates the way we move in public spaces and the way we experience Melbourne privately.
