Jan and Stacey at restaurant Roots have returned to business as “usual”, taking new bookings and honouring those that were cancelled upon their closure due to the implemented restrictions due to the Corona Virus over the last 18 months. However simply closing their doors during this time was not an option for Jan and his team. Instead, they began brainstorming how to aid the local community in the ways help was most needed. When super market shelves were empty of everything from flour to loo roll, and families relying on essential school meals were left with hungry children, Roots became a pop up shop, with their wholesale relationships allowing them to give the local community access to essentials, and even the odd treat, during the most frightening period of the pandemic. But, their efforts didn’t stop there. They supplied free tea, coffee and biscuits for hospital staff rooms across Dorset and all of the profits from their highly popular shop went towards providing essential groceries and ready made meals free of charge for frontline workers including NHS staff and the vendors in their neighbouring co-op.

Intent on producing minimal waste, Jan then ensured that any left over produce and ready meals that weren’t sold by the end of trade were collected by another local hero, a kind lady who was seeking food to supply to those affected by homelessness in the local area.

Jan at restaurant Roots continues to aid Southbourne locals as an active member of the community, working on new and exciting ideas as restrictions begin to lift and our precious freedoms are reinstated.
