Hope you are all in good heart. If you can spare a few minutes to watch this little video about my upcoming walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, I’d be most grateful.

My world walk is indefinitely on hold now - but the good news is that I can still walk through beautiful England, so the plan is to hike 250 (socially distanced) miles in two weeks - 20 miles a day - between St Austell in Cornwall and St Paul’s Cathedral in London, which is very near to the HQ of the Alzheimer’s Society.

The walk is in memory of dear Mum, who lived with Alzheimer’s for years. Those of you who remember Mum will know she was a champion walker, always with a posse of dogs at her heels. Alzheimer’s robbed her of the ability to walk, but we were so lucky, though she almost completely lost her short term memory, that she retained her sweet character and still knew all the family and her close friends, right up until we lost her in 2013.

Many who live with Alzheimer’s are not so lucky. Some, over time, are unable to recognise anyone at all, or can suffer from severe shifts in character and mood. We were lucky to have some wonderful carers for Mum but for many families it is a very long struggle, both emotionally and financially. The Alzheimer’s Society does all it can to help the many incredible carers across the country too.

During the lockdown the Alzheimer’s Society has been working especially hard to help those living with dementia, and to support their carers, whether those caring for loved ones in their own homes or care homes (where over 70 percent of the occupants have some form of dementia and have been hit especially hard over the last months).

On this 250 mile walk we are trying to raise £2,500. It is a massive target but we are going to give it our best shot. Most charities are really struggling at the moment. We feel the Alzheimer’s Society needs more help than ever to sustain the excellent job it does raising awareness about this devastating disease and helping those who live with it.

Obviously, we are also hoping to raise lots of money for the Alzheimer’s Society. So we are hoping as well as the ribbons/songs that you can spare a bean or two, for this great charity. But, if you can’t, don’t worry, we are still happy to tie a ribbon, play a song, hear your story, whether you make a donation or not.
