This is Melrose Mayor Paul Brodeur

The Melrose Board of Health has joined many of our area communities in ordering the use of face coverings in certain public places. Here is what you need to keep in mind. When you go to a store like Shaw’s, Whole Foods, CVS, or Walgreens or other retail or service establishment, you need to wear a face covering in order to enter. The same is true if you enter a restaurant to pick-up a take-out order. The city is distributing a small number of masks to establishments for their customers that might not be aware of the requirement. You can review the language of the order on the city website, and the Melrose Health Department is available to answer any questions you may have. Also, you can call MelroseHelps at 781-979-4191or email MelroseHelps@cityofmelrose.org if you need help getting a mask or need help buying food or other essential items.

Please understand the purpose of this order is not about scaring people or fining them; it is about promoting public health policies to keep people safe, both our residents and the workers providing essential services. I am proud to say that most people are already wearing face coverings and keeping their distance in stores and other public places, and I want to thank everyone for their cooperation.

And a piece of great news! The City Yard will be open from 8-3 this Saturday, April 25, for recycling and yard waste drop-off. Tremont Street will be closed to traffic at the Lynn Fells Parkway, so all cars must approach the yard from the Emerson Street side and turn onto Tremont Street northbound toward the yard. Cars will be queued up on Tremont Street to enter the yard and will be instructed to wait at the yard entrance gate. DPW staff will direct one or two cars at a time into the loop in the yard to drop off their materials. Additional cars will not be let in until the prior cars have left. Police and DPW staff will be on hand to ensure that the process runs smoothly. Please remember to wear a face covering when you do your drop-off.

Finally, it is Friday, so it is time to Clap Because We Care. By now you know how it works. At 7 p.m., head outside and make some noise to honor our frontline workers. Tonight we are featuring the song Happy!, which Melrose Wakefield Hospital plays whenever a COVID-19 patient is discharged. I hope to see you and hear tonight at 7. I can assure you that it means a lot to them!

Thanks again for all you are doing to keep each other safe. Remember that together, we will get through this.
