Following in the footsteps of The Matrix film I set out to create my take
on the legendary bullet time scene. In this scene Neo seems to slow
down time and dodge a bullet. This scene was created using 140 still
cameras set out in an array to capture the scene. The array of cameras
resulted in a frame rate of 12,000 FPS.

Most modern techniques of recreating this scene are filmed by
attaching a 360° camera to a string and throwing it around above
your head and shooting in slow motion. I wanted to trial this using the
original method from The Matrix film.
I decided to explore how this illusive scene from 1999 was created and
how the results would look if it was just 6 budget cameras used rather
than 140 professional cameras.

During the shooting of the film and with near zero information or
programs anywhere on how to edit something like this, it was almost
impossible to predict what the end result would look like once edited.
Using the song “ultrasonic sound” by Hive which was originally used
in the first matrix film gave the short clips more life as a backing to the
clips once edited. Fast beats and sudden changes in the rhythm of the song
helped to give the film life.

The use of only 6 low-quality cameras in an array helps to demonstrate
how much production went into the original scene from The Matrix.
With just six cameras the editing process took lots of aligning, exporting
and framing to create even small films with six cameras let alone 140
cameras.

The end result of this experiment is a whacky, low-quality short film
bumping around the target in the middle to the beat of a fast-paced
song.
