"Manifesto Of Humanity"
Human beings are members of a whole
In creation, of one essence and soul
If one member is afflicted with pain
Other members uneasy will remain
If you have no sympathy for others' pain
The name of 'HUMAN' you can not retain...
As written by the great 13th century Iranian poet, and master of speech, Saadi of Shiraz.
In Farsi, the poem is called 'Bani Adam', meaning "Children of Adam".
Various English translations are available. In this version, however, I have made a small but absolutely important correction in the verse,
"If you have no sympathy for others' pain"
originally translated as,
"If you have no sympathy for human pain"!
In Farsi, Saadi uses the word, "Digaran", which includes not only humans but all living beings! Good to know that, this comes from a poet who says, 'Harm not a labouring ant, for it has spirit/life, and is joyous with it!'
