For peoples of Chuuk, music and dance are deeply meaningful as modes through which to express and maintain social and cultural values. In this session, Brian Diettrich of Victoria University of Wellington discusses how two of these values—a rootedness to place and communal affiliation—are expressed in Chuukese poetry, music, and dance in moments of everyday life, and explores ways in which place and belonging intersect with international encounters.

This event is part of Oxford's "Making Global Music Meaningful" faculty development series. Join Oxford University Press for an exploration of musical cultures from around the world. Designed for instructors teaching World Music courses, our "Making Global Music Meaningful" webinar series will connect faculty with Bonnie C. Wade and Patricia Shehan Campbell, author-editors of the new text, GLOBAL MUSIC CULTURES: AN INTRODUCTION TO WORLD MUSIC, which uses case study chapters written by expert ethnomusicologists to help students connect with themes and cultures significant in the study of World Music. In each session, we will hear from a case study contributor who will introduce ways in which people in the region of their specialty have made music meaningful and useful in their culture.
