The forecast said there would be clouds, but we got lucky: It was mostly clear for the January 2019 lunar eclipse. The flickering at the end of the video is because of clouds that finally started to block the moon after totality. The moon also passed behind some nearby overhead power lines that are visible in some frames.

Production notes

I recorded the individual frames in raw format using the camera’s built-in intervalometer, processed the raw files through Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and LRTimelapse, and edited the resulting video in Adobe Premiere Pro. I don’t have a tracker, so started with the moon in the bottom left corner of the frame and then reframed the shot each time the moon reached the top of the frame. Because the moon was moving up and to the left, I created the centered magnified views by animating the anchor point of the video in Premiere so that the moon would appear to stay centered.

In the past I would use a shorter focal length to include some of the landscape, but the eclipse happened late enough that the moon was already high in the sky when it started.

I process the raw files using Lightroom to take advantage of all the editing flexibility that camera raw format offers, as well as the full resolution of the 16-megapixel frames. I have LRTimelapse level the exposures and animate adjustments over time, and generate an intermediate 4K video from the edited raw files. I add that 4K video to a 1080p sequence in Premiere Pro. Using 4K footage in a 1080p sequence makes it possible to crop and pan within the frame while still having enough resolution for full 1080p output.
