Live Coding visual performance with real time AI sound drivn generated images

The performance consists of a live coding environment on top of real time sound driven AI generated visuals.

The AI is based on a customized version of StyleGAN by Nvidia, a generative adversarial network capable of reproducing non existing results after training on a specific dataset. This mode is known as “latent exploration”, or some people refer to it as “machine dreams”, since it explores the so-called latent space of the machine, or its dreams. The learning process involves two neural networks competing against each other, so the machine is slowly able to reproduce perfectly the results it had in input (but not identical).

For this performance, the network was trained on several different mixes of datasets involving humans and natural elements, and it is based on a work previously published called Oneiric Mirror (live at oneiricmirror.art ). It explores the relation between humans and nature through the eyes of the machine, resulting in a journey through the daydreams and nightmares of the machine; hybrid anthropomorphic entities coming out from machine imperfections rather than a faithful reproduction of reality.

The live coding performance consists in using real time GLSL shaders and mathematical formulas to mess in real time the results of this process, mixing machine hallucinations with human creativity.
