Filmmaker Lorie Mitchell examines the complexities of race and sexuality in southern Louisiana sub-cultures in the series Jook Joint Blues. As a play on words, the use of "jook" as opposed to "juke" is quintessentially on the literary heels of Zora Neale Hurston's description of what a juke joint is in the essay, Characteristics of Negro Expression, published in 1934. Mitchell's flair for turning back the hands of time, immerse the audience into the lives of two families during Jim Crow. This series is a paradoxical tale of secrets, mystery, and mysticisms that calls to surface the beauty of the Louisiana culture through language, food, and music.

It's 1929, the pressure is on for Sheriff Zachary Bordelon (Alec Franco), in the small city of Opelousas, Louisiana. Within the last two months, five negro girls have gone missing. Sheriff Bordelon is having a difficult time getting the black and Creole community to trust him due to the recent uproar of racial tension caused by activist Eugene St. Cyr. (Charles Viney, Jr.). Pressure and social tensions increase when the daughter of Earl LeDay (Mordecai Mose), a local horse breeder and the owner of Earl's Joint, goes missing.

As news spreads of the disappeared girls through the Negro gossip mill, it reaches New York City, where Earl's estranged brother, Saul LeDay (Omar Lewis, Jr), is working at a local Negro newspaper and is assigned to cover the story. Fearing an unwelcomed homecoming, Saul reluctantly returns to Opelousas and crosses paths with an old friend, Bruce Bordelon, (Jorden Heitkamp). As Saul tries to connect with those in the town, he is given three days by the Sherriff to complete his write-up. Through his investigation, he learns more about the town's people and his friend Bruce than he bargains for.

Jook Joint Blues is a marriage of stories intertwining with one another, creating non-stop drama, mystery, and entertainment.
