This was 1984, and the super-chill counter-culture magazine called “Jill” wanted to make a film about the new wave of Japanese designers. I was in Paris shooting for Karl Lagerfeld. But Karl was crazy busy and had me waiting. Barbara Schlager, the superb photo rep in Paris, called me and asked if I could shoot for one day. There was no budget, like $0...but there would be a great cast, clothes, hair and make-up.
When I arrived on the set there was a truck with a full crew waiting to shoot the "behind the scenes video". I was alone with a small metal case with a super 8 camera in it, and some film.
They were shocked. Where was my crew? An assistant? Nothing?
I borrowed their lights for a couple of interior scenes.
What I shot that day was this four minute collage with a vague storyline.
I ended up spending $400 of my own money on it and never got paid back, not in cash anyway...
But Paula Greif who was then a brilliant editor at Conde Nast, heard about the little film, came to my apartment to see it. She then sent it to Jeff Ayeroff at Warner Brothers records in LA.
He supposedly proclaimed, "This is what music videos should look like!"
Thy sent me back to Paris with a crew this time to shoot my first gig, for Scritti Politti, for the song "Perfect Way"
