James Brandon Lewis - tenor sax / Aruán Ortiz / Brad Jones - bass / Chad Taylor - drums

Music as an alternative to the present, not an escape from but an escape to...the reality of being of just merely resting in being but not complacent, but content in trusting the freedom of the music as a real transport to other realms that truly free us from the plagues of this world. We shall become closer to the idea of that home and the escape to that maybe within this time or this realm and breath…but if we do, we draw really on the strength of music the real strength and not the surface or the agreed language but a treasured Individualism the only accepted ism that makes up the creative whole of we.

Filmed and recorded on July 29, 2021 at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn for AFA Vision Festival 25.

James Brandon Lewis is a critically acclaimed saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator. Lewis has received accolades from New York Times, Q Magazine and cultural tastemakers such as Ebony Magazine, who hailed him as one of the “7 Young Players to Watch” in todays scene.

Pianist, violist, and composer Aruán Ortiz – born in Santiago de Cuba, and resident of Brooklyn – has been an active figure in the progressive jazz and avant-garde scene in the US for more than 15 years. Named “one of the most creative and original composers in the world” (Lynn René Bayley, The Art Music Lounge), he has written music for jazz ensembles, orchestras, dance companies, chamber groups, and feature films, incorporating influences from contemporary classical music, Cuban Haitian rhythms, and avant-garde improvisation. Aruán consistently strives to break stylistic musical boundaries.

Bradley Jones is an American jazz bassist who performs on both bass guitar and double-bass. Jones started on drums as a child and first began playing bass guitar at age 12. At age 18 he added double bass, studying under Lisle Atkinson, and he took a bachelor's degree in music education at Jersey City State College in 1986. In the late 1980s he worked regularly with Dave Tronzo and Jim Nolet, and played in the Jazz Passengers and in groups led by Marc Ribot. In the 1990s he worked with Muhal Richard Abrams, Elvin Jones, Ornette Coleman, Carlos Garnett, Mark Taylor, Kazutoki Umezu, Misha Mengelberg, and Han Bennink.[ He has led the groups AKA Alias featuring Curtis Fowlkes and David Gilmore, the Brad Jones Quartet with Greg Tardy and more recently Avant Lounge with Bruce Williams, Barney McAll, Bill Ware and Nate Smith.
