Instrumental music had been a mainstay of pop music culture since the days of the Big Band era. It reached a peak and plateau in the late 50's and early 60's thanks to artists and conductors such as Henry Mancini, Richard Maltby, Hugo Winterhalter, Percy Faith, Morris Stoloff, Andre Kostelanetz, Bert Kaempfert, Floyd Cramer, and many others. By the late 60's and 70's traditional pop instrumentalists that peaked during the period sometimes called "Space Age Pop" were still around, but not in as great a supply or demand as the golden age of 1955-65.
German pianist Horst Jankowski was one of the last of this period with his smash hit "A Walk In The Black Forest." The tune reached #1 on the US easy listening chart, #12 on the on the Billboard Hot 100, and #9 on the Cash Box Top 100 on July 3, 1965. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
The pianist in the video is NOT Horst Jankowski but an actor from the film She Shoulda Said No! (1949). It is dream (or hallucinatory) sequence where a so-so pot-smoking piano player envisions himself as a world famous classical pianist. This is blended with beautiful forest scenes.
