The dippers are renovating at Kokanee Creek! They collect creek-side moss and add it to the cozy interior and the exterior of their domed nest. We are lucky to be able to watch them build their nest because so many dipper nests are located under waterfalls or hidden on creek banks. American Dippers (and other dipper species in the rest of the world) are the only truly aquatic song birds. Dippers "fly" under water and can walk on the creek bed of raging Kokanee Creek. But these tubby little grey birds don't look like songbirds! Regardless the names we give him the male carries on singing loudly just before diving into Kokanee Creek in search of some yummy insect larvae or small fish. Enjoy!
