TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

“Haere Mai” was made famous when it was sung by Inia Te Wiata on a recording called Waiata Māori: Inia Te Wiata Festival of Maori Song (1996), Kiwi Records.
There are many Maori waiata of welcome, most using similar ritual words. The one chosen here is a well-known, uplifting waiata that can also be used as a waiata kīnaki to support a speaker.

On this version, guitars and ukulele have been introduced, together with harmonies. This version is an example of a large group of men, women, and children singing together onstage.

When used in the classroom as a call-and-response song, this waiata is an effective way of encouraging students to listen carefully and repeat what they hear.

“Haere Mai” is a three-chord song, and this version would work well in an exercise to encourage students to listen for chord changes and is ideally suited to ukulele and guitar accompaniment.
