Griot Areítos is a text based video. The visceral narrative is told by a griot-of-sorts, who details the yearly harvest of some neighbourhood fruit and their annual collaborative language formation, with embedded acts of both verbal and physical resistance, taken from examples throughout history. Griot Areítos Explores the pivotal role of the parent/home for those of a diasporic identity when experiencing their culture in relation to language. The Areito (Plural Areítos) was a Taíno ceremony in which singing, dancing, instrumental music and poetry are combined. Initially believed to simply mean 'group' in Taíno Arawakan, Spanish colonisers used the word to categorise all forms of Taíno song and dance. Eventually, the Areíto was performed by the Taíno as an act of resistance and reclamation.
