Although this seasonal classic is often attributed to one of my favorite bands, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the song was actually recorded in 1974 and released as a solo work by EL&P vocalist Greg Lake in 1975. By the mid-1970's in America, unlike the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, Christmas songs did not chart very high if they charted at all, so it is no surprise that this most excellent composition only reached #92 on Cash Box and #95 on Billboard on January 3, 1976, whereas in December 1975 in the UK it was #2 to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." This song stirs the blood on so many different levels and is not just one concept, despite a definitely cynical, even darkly so in places, theme. This Greg Lake video is my contribution to Christmas on YouTube this year; sorry it is not a more cheery or merry melody, but that's not where things are right now for me.
NOTE (12-18-19): Not too cheery this year either! Even less so, I think.
