'Flightless' explores human longing and loneliness. Through the use of repetition and reoccurring motifs the experimental short film transposes a visual experience of humanity, touching on the discomforts of human isolation.
Inspired by the themes and aesthetic of Clio Barnard’s 'Dark Glass' and Sendoa Cardoso’s short 'Solo', Flightless incorporates symbols of hands reaching to depict desire, flying birds to represent freedom and open eyes to illustrate searching and seeking.
The use of birds and nature landscapes create contrast to out reaching hands and tear-filled eyes which connote a sense of looking and longing.
Loneliness is further conveyed by the reappearance of the same person; a single figure whose inner darkness is suggested through black clothing whilst their bare arms and shoulders hint at a vulnerability. She sits alone, surrounded only by grey space. Her body parts are also depicted as silhouettes and shadows. The sense of distance from self is heightened through entrapment, isolation and dissatisfaction.
A dull, predominately blue colour scheme consolidates an emotional flatness and sense of upset. A gentle strumming of guitar accompanies birds singing to create a non-imposing soundscape that purposefully lacks business or excitement.
The film invites the audience to experience a desolate world of isolation, emptiness and vacancy, allowing spectators to connect through a unified sense of being kept apart and so strongly desiring freedom and companionship. This thematic exploration holds particular relevance in a current world of quarantining, social distancing and indefinite isolation where we continue to ask ourselves ‘is it over yet?’.
