As August slips into September, and a new season begins, I recall an old familiar chorus from the song “September Song” by Kurt Weill.

But it's a long, long while
From May to December
And the days grow short
When you reach September…

And the days dwindle down
To a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days
I'd spend with you
These precious days I'd spend with you

What stirs in our hearts as we turn the calendar to a new month of a continued pandemic? Have we spent PRECIOUS days with or without those PRECIOUS to us?

Did Cornelia Connelly, our founder, treasure each day as PRECIOUS? Did she realize the PRECIOUS few days she would have with her children? Did she long for more PRECIOUS days with her husband? From May to November, were her days in the garden at Grand Coteau or the Chapel at Mayfield PRECIOUS?

Each September, Cornelia exhorted to her Sisters, “All ought to begin again the sweetly laborious work of...” Then, it was education. Today, it’s any manner of sweet labor. Cornelia found PRECIOUS joy in each day, even with a broken heart.

We open a new month and season enduring a pandemic in a broken world. Let us begin again with “sweetly laborious work!” Pray for our troubled world, advocate for social justice, act against racism, and give witness to a love full of action. These are PRECIOUS sights to God.
