My proposal came from the ‘How might we?” of ‘How might the unique
structure and history of the vase engage kids and their families in a sensory/physical experience for those who may find museums boring.’ I
wanted a way to engage both kids and parents in a way that would be fun,
beneficial, and educational for everybody involved.
The idea is to have an interactive playground based on the structure of
the vase. There is an app that visitors can use to access an interactive
augmented reality experience where they learn about different features of
the vase. This is geared towards parents as they can often get bored when
kids are playing in playgrounds and may want to keep learning about the
objects at the museum. The benefit of augmented reality, as opposed to
virtual reality, is that the parents can watch their kids through the camera
on the app while learning with the augmented reality interactions. The
kids can enjoy different hands-on aspects of the kinetic playground while
the parents are occupied but still aware of their children.
The vase has a unique history and process that has gone into making it
and is also beautiful, so showcasing it as part of an exhibition would work
well. In this experience, everyone is involved, and the parents can create
a learning experience with their kids by showing them the AR on their
phones and relaying information to them. Kids can happily play on slides,
swings, so they don’t complain about being bored and parents can continue to learn.
