A “corner,” while used quite literally when referenced in David Simon's The Wire, can be any physical intersection where people congregate to discuss Purpose, Intent, Action and Aftermath. Location is central and intensely specific to The Wire's message but the stories, themes and struggles are truly universal. Much has been said and written about the creation, perpetuation, writing and acting on HBO’s far and away best effort at televised art. With this video, I wanted to highlight the incredible camera design of Uta Briesewitz and Bob Colesberry and the fantastic efforts of Production Manager Nina Kostroff-Noble, Location Manager Charley Armstrong and Location Scout Eric Bannat to bring all the character traits of Baltimore itself, burnishes, bumps, beauty and blemishes, to life. Juxtaposed with Clark's so-called "anti-protest song" that fairly gushes with child-like optimism, the contradictions and convolutions become self-evident. A city’s rise or decline cannot be ascribed to a single factor; as Lester Freamon opines: all the pieces matter. And as Gus Haynes so astutely states: you need a lot of context to understand anything. The Wire is not a perfect show, it can be challenging, frustrating and downright unsatisfying to a newcoming viewer, but it gives context where it is needed and has the trust and faith in its audience to ask that some deduction be made outside of the text. One needs to see all the pieces, to understand why each matters. (Don’t bail on Season 2, it is absolutely crucial) And for those who heard I was doing this and were wondering what took so long; what can I say: got that Pandemic!
