Like Rococo, my work is inspired by nature. I borrowed elements of Francesco Albani’s painting ‘Danza di Amorini’ as a way to pay homage to that art style. The frame as well as the dancing angels that appear in the sky are from that painting. Albani was considered too pretty for the Baroque period in which he painted in much the same way I feel about my landscape work in the current conceptual art milieu. There is also an interaction between the fixed ornate frame constraining the moving landscape. It brings to mind humans trying to capture and constrain nature throughout the centuries in art, industry and politics. Do we control nature or do we let it control us? Other major influences for this body of nature based work are Rebecca Solnit’s book ‘Wanderlust’ and Andrea Wulf’s book ‘The Invention of Nature’.

The piece is about me having an evening smoke and watching the world go dark. It can be interpreted as just watching dusk descend or as a symbol of the eternal cycle of light and darkness. The more high I get the more I start seeing angels in the sky. Many people in times of trouble find ways to medicate themselves, sometimes with drugs sometimes with religion. The dog with no collar or leash is almost like a wild animal but it’s been trained to stand on that rock and wait for its owner. People have controlled animals and nature for so long and with such enormous consequences. Is it too late? Are we left to self medicate as we watch the world disappear, before calmly walking away. Then the video starts again, on a loop. There is light again, the cycle continues.
