The piece “Escape” illustrates how depression operates inside the mind of those with it. I came across this idea after listening to the instrumental version of Billie Eilish and Khalid’s song “Lovely,” and decided that I wanted to tap into the original meaning behind the song and it’s melancholy melody. I then proceeded to craft a story surrounding a young college student’s struggle with depression despite seeming fine from the outside. The main goal of this piece is to provide a general audience with another way of understanding and learning about depression and to encourage them to be more conscientious of the silent mind battles people may be fighting around them.
