The song, "Elephant in a Porcelain Store" is about how we treat each other as a society. Some of us come together in clicks while others are isolated and left because they don’t fit the group’s image. This discrimination transcends factors like race and ethnicity and occurs to everyone including those of us who look no different than others. "Elephant in a Porcelain Store" is the Scandinavian equivalent of the adage a “Bull in a China Shop.” It means a person who breaks things or who often makes mistakes or causes damage in situations that require careful thinking or behavior. So, these outsiders ("Elephants") are being discriminated against because the in-crowd believes they simply don’t fit in with their look. The song’s title also invokes the double entendre of “An Elephant in the Room” in that there is an obvious problem or difficult situation in society that people don’t want to talk about. It is a positive song in a way, but also solemn as well, which is evidenced in the diametrically opposite verse and chorus.
Plot
The music video takes us through the vantage point of people who are otherwise normal but are being discriminated against for factors like their clothes and appearance. The introduction begins with a young woman walking her dog and traipsing around and skaters who are using their skateboards as a means of transportation rather than simply for fun. None of these groups are allowed inside certain places. A man is not allowed inside a fancy store because he is not fancy enough. The girl isn’t allowed in any stores because she has a Pitbull type dog. The skaters aren’t allowed in certain places because they are riding skateboards.
We arrive at one of the doors leading to the inside of one of the stores where everyone on the outside is peering in. Through the windows, everyone on the inside looks weird and distorted almost like we’re seeing the viewpoint of someone on an acid trip. Do we wonder if this is what the inside of every one of those stores looks like? We see the people inside shopping and dancing around while the onlookers outside are only allowed to peer in, but aren’t allowed inside. We imagine what it would be like to go through one of those doors and see one open up.
In the next scene we now see a different man and the young woman from the beginning in an embrace. The man had been waiting for her this whole time inside one of the stores, but the woman no longer has her dog with her. We ask whether she has given up her dog to be with him and become one with the in-crowd as the two of them walk together down the same road she walked on at the very beginning, but we aren’t able to see the man’s face, as it’s now become distorted and the skateboarders we saw earlier now ride off into the sunset.
Lyrics
Purple elephants in porcelain stores
Purple elephants in porcelain stores
How did they get here first of all?
What are they doing traipsing about?
They don’t belong inside the store
Facing fear and loathing
They must have a really big door
To fit …
Purple elephants in porcelain stores
Why are we discriminating against – them
Don’t know how they got here to begin – with
What have we got against – them?
Why do we question everything?
Some things are best left unknown
Maybe they’re just trying to get home
I had a dream that you and I
Lived together up in the sky
Where the stars and the moon, shine
You said you’d be mine
But how did we get there to begin – with
Where we part of an experiment
Or is this all just a dream
Why do we question everything?
Some things are best left unknown
Now we’re just trying to get home
