Ecology Study (2016) by Edward Breitweiser and Michael Junokas is a set of handmade interactive electronic circuits that includes four channels of sound. The circuitry enacts an interplay between discrete parts and a larger holistic system, mimicking the effects of a small natural ecosystem. The four audio channels are identical iterations of the same circuit that performs a nuanced (but dynamic) repetitive sequence; however, minor imperfections in their construction and materials produce audible distinctions between them (this one is a little higher-pitched, this one is a little slower, etc.). All four channels are controlled by a light-sensitive power supply; as less light reaches the supply, the performance of the audio circuits slows down. Consequently, viewers approaching the circuitry enact the threshold between a single, incoherent "ecosystem" (all four circuits performing rapid sequences) and the disparate voices of four "species" singing independently.
