Milan Cathedral (Duomo de Milano), is one of the largest and most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. It is 157 meters wide, 45 meters high, 11,700m² and has a capacity for more than 40,000 people.
It is an impressive church that has five naves, one central and four lateral, divided by 52 columns of 24 meters in height each. The facade of the Cathedral, which had the exclusive use of the Candoglia deposit, was covered in white-pink marble and dark marble. The top that has 136 marble points, an infinity of spiers and needles decorated with statues that contemplate the city.
Construction of the building began in 1386 and was completed just 500 years after construction began.
Giuseppe Perego carved a gold-leafed statue in 1774, which stands at the highest point of the church, known as the Madonnina, which later became one of Milan's greatest symbols.
The Italian word Duomo derives from the fact that cathedrals are considered the main house of God (Domus Dei).
