Vocals: Sophie Milman
Lyrics: Sonya Roznberg, a young Communist League member from Kharkov, 1942,
Cheboksary, Chuvashia Region of Russia (approximately 700 km east of Moscow).
Music: Unknown, with instrumental parts and arrangement by Sergei Erdenko.
This was one of the few songs in the collection that included original sheet
music. It describes Chuvashia, a region that did not have a significant Jewish
community until 1941. “Daughters of Chuvashia” tells the story of the draft and
service of women in the Red Army. About 900,000 Soviet women engaged in
combat during World War II. Women served in medical and provision units,
but also as pilots, spies and even infantry members. The soft melody does
not mask the firm determination of women soldiers to fight against Hitler and
his ideology. The final part is inspired by Rio Rita, an American song from the
Broadway musical Rio Rita (1927), composed by Harry Tierney (1890 – 1965).
Chuvasher Tekhter was first collected by Hersh Kleyner.
