Of all those words, though, perhaps my favorite line is "Awake, my soul, and sing." There's something supernatural about speaking to your own soul — particularly the implications for Christians, who affirm the value of both body and soul.

As believers, we recognize that we are far more than mere physical bodies and that we have a spiritual reality within ourselves. And yet, it's not quite enough to acknowledge our spirit, or to believe it exists, since our spirits can become sleepy, dreary, even deathly, over time. That in mind, this song and others like it call our inward self to awaken.

Why do we awaken? We must, for it is our purpose. Like bodies are meant to breathe, so our souls are meant to sing. Without spiritual songs, we might say, we are asleep.

Our souls become most alive, as if awoken by the sun, when we worship the King. So join with me as we awaken this day and recognize the glory and goodness of God.
