From 1982 until the end of the decade I was a major MTV fan. During the pre-Internet days when VHS ruled, MTV was the YouTube of cable television ... and if you wanted your voice to be heard, you did it through desktop publishing. Many of the new recording artists I discovered in the 1980's were not on FM or AM radio but were found courtesy of MTV.

One of the newcomers of that time burst on the scene thirty years ago in 1986 with a devil of a song and video to match. We would all be hearing a lot more of Chris Isaak as the years passed, on video, television shows, and in films, including films by director David Lynch. As far as I am concerned, he was and is one of the top recording artists to appear this side of 1986. This was the song that got the ball rolling for me which I first saw on MTV in early 1987. The song was artistic genius, the video a rolling landscape against which Isaak's band members were silhouetted while he sang and played guitar. What I find surprising is that the song itself never even charted on Billboard or Cash Box. Then again, not surprising ... many of the new artists discovered on MTV that did chart never would have if they had simply released their songs to radio stations and would have only at best received local or regional attention. Exposure on MTV was the ticket to eventual, if not immediate, success and fame.

Over thirty years later and "You Owe Me Some Kind Of Love" still resonates. Haunting, dark, and moody, this timeless rock classic could have worked in any era from the 50's through today. My video takes the song into our time.
