Essential Prayers Project deliberately uses an individualized "singer/songwriter" style—American diction with diphthongs and emphasized consonants, vernacular ornamentation with pitch-bends and mixed resonance. Contrast this with fully blended, raised-palate, pure-vowel vocal style elicited by Grammy-winning choral director Craig Hella Johnson.

Father Mychal Judge (1933-2001) was a Franciscan friar and New York City Fire Department chaplain when he entered the North Tower with first responders on September 11, 2001, and was killed by debris from the collapse of the South Tower. Gay, alcoholic and the son of impoverished immigrants, Father Myke's ministry to the underserved of the city was legendary. His daily prayer:

Lord, take me where you want me to go
Let me meet who you want me to meet
Tell me what you want me to say
And keep me out of your way.
