Following the success of "A Summer Song," this haunting and moody melody was released as a single in late 1964. It was the pop duo's third major hit in the United States where they found a far larger audience than in their home UK. Written by college student Ann Ronell back in 1932, the song was considered too intricate by music publishers to be played "straight" for the commercial or "traditional pop" audience (too ahead of its time, in other words). It instead became a jazz hit at the end of that year when recorded by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. It remained a jazz standard and was covered by various artists until the song's original vision would finally be realized over 30 years later when covered by Chad & Jeremy. It became a #1 hit on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart and remained popular on the playlists of adult contemporary and easy listening AM and FM radio stations for decades after. It reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 23, 1965 and #22 on the Cash Box Top 100 a week earlier.
