A Campfire Haiku is a series of cinematic Haikus, inspired by Vimeo's weekend challenge, that shine a light on fascinating people, topics and places from around the world.

CAMPFIRE HAIKU: #VIETNAM

Hoi An, Vietnam, a Unesco world heritage site filled with ancient buildings and brightly coloured textured walls. And when the sun goes down, the lanterns come out making it perfect for the Instagramm generation.

Having visited here 15 years ago, you can really see and feel the contrast between now and then. Despite the buildings staying the same, the vibe is now very different. It's more like a shopping mall in an ancient setting, there are gift shops, coffee shops and restaurants everywhere you look.

Back then, it was mainly backpackers who made it this far out in deepest Vietnam. There was more of a laid back vibe. We would go out and take pictures with our little pocket digital cameras and email them to our friends back home via an internet cafe.

This obviously comes off like an old man spinning yarns about the good old days but alas,
you cannot get in the way of progress.

Hoi An and its locals still delivers the perfect backdrop for your videos and photos, albeit by getting up at 6am to avoid the crowds.

Now, the hunt is on to find a place out there that's a little more raw to satisfy the backpacking wanderlust that Hoi An once satisfied. Suggestions welcome.
