A Campfire Haiku is a series of cinematic Haikus, inspired by Vimeo's weekend challenge, that shine a light on fascinating people, topics and places from around the world.

CAMPFIRE HAIKU: HAPPY VALLEY

Every Wednesday, Happy Valley in Hong Kong sparkles into life at the racecourse that was once swampland.

Thousands attend to have a flutter, utilising their analytical systems or just sheer luck. And this reflects the type of characters you see in the stands or trackside.

Each race carries around HK$140m of bets per race. There are live bands and plenty of alcohol to entice you stay for each one.

Upon leaving, HK$100 of that vast pot was kindly donated by a punter who was relying on beginner's luck that never materialised. That punter, was me.

It makes sense of the words Wilson Mizner, the Americam playwright once wrote: "The only sure thing about luck is that it will change." A simple promise that has the power to extract millions out of us.
