I created a deterministic video animation for the song 'Born A Worm' by Dan Reeder with the goal of using color to increase the intelligibility of each voice in the arrangement. After recording vocals, I converted each track to MIDI data (essentially a digital piano roll for music information) using Ableton Live's native audio-to-MIDI conversion, which required a good degree of manual tweaking to match the performance. I then used a modified version of Omino's 'Hello Again MIDI' Script, which converted the MIDI data into keyframes in After Effects, with separate channels for note duration, velocity, and intensity. For each voice, I assigned the scale of the box to the intensity of the note (the velocity parameter from the MIDI data), and the color so the hue, in degrees around the color wheel, was such that each octave was a full rotation around the color wheel. So, C was 0 degrees, C# was 30 degrees, D was 60 degrees, and so on, until the next C was back at 0 degrees. Accordingly, when two voices play the same musical note, say, an E, in any register, the colors of their representative boxes will be the same.
