The huantou is an instrument used by barbers to let people know he's in the vicinity. Street hawkers used to roam the streets and alleyways selling a rich variety of services and wares. Each thing being sold each had an instantly recognizable call or song, some with the help of sounding instruments. These are disappeared and half-forgotten sounds of old Beijing.
