Steeped in the fervour of rap, rhythm, funk, and urban fashion codes, as well as video clip aesthetics and the political power of muralism, Maxwell Alexandre creates monumental frescoes that navigate painting, drawing, and comics. His work is both figurative and narrative, inspired by scenes of daily life as observed in the streets of Rocinha, Latin America’s largest favela, located in his home town of Rio de Janeiro, where he lives and works.
For the exhibition "HAVE YOU SEEN A HORIZON LATELY?" Maxwell created "Pardo é Papel: First Contact" during his residency at MACAAL. For this site-specific installation, he combined different techniques and supports with the recurrent use of brown wrapping paper commonly found in Brazil: Pardo (literally “brown”), to which he assigns a politically subversive meaning. This brown paper covers all surfaces of one room, immersing visitors in Maxwell’s universe while in the second room they can freely recompose the fragments of drawings scattered across the walls and tables.
With the use of multiple references such as mural painting and rap music, the artist celebrates anonymous Afro-Brazilians whose black bodies proudly rise from the surface of his large-format painting featured in the show.
